Ion Koman was born in Garaghish (Moldova) in 1954. After graduating from the faculty of painting and drawing at the College of Fine Arts “Repin” in Kishinev in 1978, he moved to Moscow where he worked as a political artist and collaborated with various publishing houses (Mysl, Detskaya Literatura, Raduga a Mosca e Literatura Artistica a Kishinev). In this period he frequented a number of artists, writers, and in particular, a group of “anticonformist” painters in Malaya Gruzinskaya Street, who were unwelcome to the Soviet authorities and were forced to exhibit paintings and sculptures in a basement. He has been a member of the Moscow Painters and Designers Union since 1991 and works in both Italy and Moscow. Ion has collaborated with Campanotto Editore (Pasian di Prato, Udine) as a book illustrator (Pacala and Tyndala – 1994, Martino e la luna -2001).
